Title:Support for Georgetown’s middle-income students

Marcia Syufy (Parent’85,’93, Grandparent’16,’21) recently made a $250,000 gift toward the established Syufy Family Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need, with a preference for students from middle-income families.

In the midst and aftermath of the pandemic, Syufy thinks that the need for scholarships could grow.

“Things are now very different for everybody financially,” Syufy says.

To potential donors considering where to direct their philanthropy, Syufy says, “I would like you to take a look at this situation that exists for middle-income people. Why not give them a boost? I think it could be a very interesting and popular way for people to give without having to give huge amounts of money.”

Although Syufy is not Catholic herself, she admires Catholic education of the whole person. “I sent my children to Catholic school,” she says. “They got an absolutely fantastic education.” She has made gifts to several Catholic schools and aims to help provide a better experience for students through her middle-income giving.

“Both of my daughters had very good experiences at Georgetown,” Syufy says. “I think middle-income students should be able to have a good experience too.”

Syufy says that hearing from scholarship recipients brings her personal satisfaction. “I get letters from students who received scholarships that are just wonderful,” she says. “They are extremely appreciative. The students understand how this has made their whole experience at Georgetown better.”
